KINETIC ART:The Moving Image 4 art elective credits
Course Description:
Kinetic Art moves by itself, or causes the viewer to move physically, to be appreciated. Over a two-week period, you will create a kinetic art project using your own drawings, which requires the viewer to move from side-to-side while observing your work. You will: (1) create three drawings or designs with some thematic relationship to each other, (2) create a frame for your drawings, (3) mount those drawings within that framework, and (4) critique the thematic artwork of other students in your group.
Experience your inner creativity as you create kinetic art. Drawing ability is not a requirement, however, a vivid imagination and a willingness to try something new, is.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this course, you will:
Develop ability to think about and articulate relationships (themes) between objects or ideas expressed in your drawings;
Transform those objects or ideas on paper using simple drawing techniques that you will develop as you progress through the project;
Creatively use color for each drawing adding depth, shading, patterns, and shapes that are visually pleasing to you;
Easily assemble a unique type of art that works as a visually moving object;
Constructively critique, verbally and in writing, work of other classmates who have created kinetic art projects.
Each of you belongs to a group of four classmates. You have each others’ blog addresses, email addresses, Skype addresses, and cell phone numbers and have been communicating effectively during this course series. You will continue to do so with this elective course.
For your discussions you will consider the questions posed in Discussions 1 and 2. You will answer those questions and post your answers on your blog. Please be mindful of grammar and spelling.
Your group members will respond to your answers by
commenting on what you said in positive terms;
asking reflective questions about what you said;
making suggestions to improve your response to the discussion question(s).
Discussion 1
How can having a "theme" help when creating an art project?
Explain why you chose that theme and how you plan to translate that theme into your three separate drawings.
What is another theme that you may consider for your kinetic art project?
What would one drawing to accompany that other theme look like?
Post to your blog and to the Series email address ArtElective.2@RELCII.com by 11:59pm, Week 1, Day 2.
Discussion 2
Research one artist who specializes in kinetic art.
Describe his work. What makes it kinetic art?
What do you like (dislike) about it?
Post to your blog and to the Series email address ArtElective.2@RELCII.com by 11:59pm, Week 2, Day 5.
Individual Assignment
Holding your papers horizontally, you will create three separate drawings on 9 x 12 sketch paper. You will decide on a theme that visually ties each of your drawings together. For example, a drawing of a large eye on each paper -- one with a brown iris on drawing 1, one with a green iris on drawing 2, and one with a blue iris on drawing 3 -- has what theme running through them?
Color each drawing using either colored pencils or crayons. Select vibrant colors. Fill the entire area of each paper with color. Do not leave any white space. Remember to press firmly with pencil or crayon to create pictures that "pop."
Post to your blog by 11:59pm, Week 1, Day 7.
Group Assignment
Review the drawings of each member in your group. Select the work of two of your members to critique.
Identify the theme that flows through the three drawings for each member that you have selected.
Write one paragraph describing the theme you have identified. Include the following: How well has the artist portrayed the theme? Why you think the portrayal is or is not effectively done. Give constructive suggestions that might improve the portrayal, if you determine that it does not effectively portray the theme.
Write a second paragraph describing two possible alternative drawings that might portray the theme identified.
Post to your individual blog and submit a copy to ArtElectiveSeries.2@RELCII.com by 11:59 pm, Week 2, Day 3. Respond to two group members by 11:59p, Week 2, Day 5.
Final Assignment
